Why did Twitter lay off nearly half of its workforce? Why is Apple also laying off workers? What’s going on!?
More importantly, what can you do about it?
Everywhere you look in the news, tech companies are executing massive layoffs.
Given tech was recently the industry with the highest growth rates, this can be discouraging.
If you are a leader who is out of work or who is considering leaving a job that is no longer satisfying, energizing, or growing your skills, the news can be downright depressing.
It’s certainly not inspiring.
So, What are your options? Fortunately, you have several:
OPTION ONE: Fold! Just stay miserable.
We don't recommend this option. Life is short, and there are other ways to make the most of your career.
So read on!
OPTION TWO: Enhance your current job. Explore ideas with peers, friends, or your coach about how to reorganize or reposition yourself at your current organization.
Imagine if you were to take a 20,000 ft. view of your industry and your specific organization and found a new path to success and happiness.
Where are new problems showing up?
What challenges are being presented in this new economy?
What is the biggest factor to consider in turning your situation into a winning opportunity?
Once you’ve gathered some answers, identify ways you can be part of the solution. Doing that will create growth for you as a leader and could put you back in control of your future within your company.
At the very least, it can be an interesting puzzle to explore, purely from what you’ll learn in the process.
My team and I would be happy to help you with that.
Option three: Aim for tech anyway. While companies in the tech space (or any industry, for that matter) might be eliminating jobs in certain areas, they may also have open opportunities related to new strategic initiatives as they change goals in other departments.
Keep your eye out for openings regardless of “level,” indicating that a company is still looking to add people who can propose new improvements and solve problems.
There may be posted or UNPOSTED jobs at those companies at your level.
They may need your experience and vision.
There’s another option, but we’ll cover that in the next blog post - stay tuned.
