“Quiet Hiring” - Your Career Move After Getting Hired

The title of this blog may seem confusing.

Why would someone think about advancement right after getting hired?

In our previous blog, we talked about the current phenomenon called Quiet Hiring which occurs after someone has secured a new job and they find themselves immediately competing for additional responsibilities to be positioned for growth and advancement.

Statistically, 80% of people surveyed in a 2023 Monster poll said that they have been “quiet hired.”

If this is happening to you in your new role, or you're thinking it strange as it starts happening around you, don’t consider jumping ship so fast! It's happening everywhere. It’s possible it may happen to you again if you leave to find a new job.

Instead, consider talking through with your managers how to make the most of the opportunities that are coming your way, even if they feel like they're being imposed.

When you make the most of your talents and passions, your natural leadership abilities get recognized. So, as soon as you see the opportunity to discuss your career, or as soon as you’re hired in a new role, begin to look for opportunities to align yourself with the kind of initiatives that will make your work enjoyable and outstanding.

Here are a couple of particular tips on how to do just that.

1. Lock in your foundation. Ensure you're focused on your primary role in a passionate, rigorous, and thorough manner that leads to efficiency, so that it doesn't take up all your bandwidth. You don’t want to be drained at the moment new opportunities arise. This could include being extremely clear about your vision, building relationships with people to whom you can delegate tasks to, and spending time to upgrade your organizational systems and operating procedures.

2. Create bandwidth. Let the people around you know that you are going to be taking on additional responsibilities. There may come a time when you request their support, whether that's at home or at work. Be prepared by having support around you before you take on new challenges which will require more time.

3. Set criteria for yourself. What do ideal opportunities look like for you? What are your passions and talents and how might they be applied to best serve your organization?

4. Talk to peers and mentors. Create a conversation around important initiatives, whether they are already brewing at the company or by identifying gaps that the company is not pursuing.  Find the challenges, problems or opportunities, that, if you were to fill any of those gaps, you would make an impactful difference. This can put you in excellent standing for a promotion to that next level of leadership you desire - and that could quietly happen sooner than you think!

So how about you?

What would the roadmap for your own quiet hiring look like for your ideal advancement?
