There’s a new buzzword in the employment world: “Quiet Hiring”
In 2023, it joined its cousin, “Quiet Quitting”, as the workplace has continued to adapt and adjust to a new paradigm since the pandemic ended.
But, what exactly is quiet hiring? Or, quiet quitting for that matter?
And, why should you care? Let’s begin with why you should care.
Landing your dream job as you advance your career is only step one. Once you’re in, it will be critical to effectively navigate the landscape of a post-pandemic workplace. Understanding the dynamics underlying quiet quitting and quiet hiring is paramount to that navigation.
Some employees weren’t too happy with their careers before the pandemic and, while some chose to quit and move on, others stayed in these roles after the pandemic restrictions ended..
Now, they find themselves in an unhappy workplace and are choosing to do the bare minimum necessary to simply maintain employment and receive a paycheck. There’s no going “above and beyond”. There’s no excitement, no passion, no desire to truly excel in the organization.
THIS is what quiet quitting was all about. People were doing the bare minimum to stay hired, rather than performing at their best.
It didn’t work for anyone, and eventually led to leaders and managers getting fired.
Additionally, as layoffs ramp up, remaining employees were - and are - tasked with taking on increased responsibility to fill in the void, without increased pay or promotion (and, with the added fear of more potential layoffs). Frustration mounts and, again, performance erodes.
Managers familiar with quiet quitting can seek to resolve the underlying root of the discontent and take action to transform the work environment and re-engage employees to avoid layoffs and losing talent.
If you’re entering an organization with some quiet quitters in the mix, there’s good news! Quiet hiring is also on the upswing.
Quiet hiring occurs when a company fills roles with internal talent that they’d typically fill externally by creatively shuffling the deck.
If you’ve just secured a job towards your dream career with a company engaged in quiet hiring, this can be a stepping stone to a bigger opportunity and certainly a chance to showcase your talents and skills as well as your desire to go above and beyond your present position.
So, once you’ve gotten the job, there are opportunities to be seized!
New doors are opening to be hired and promoted into the next level of leadership, increasing your earning potential and job satisfaction!
This is why it’s so important to continually sharpen your leadership and communications skills.
Once you’ve landed your dream job, prepare your plan of action to continually develop yourself so that you can quickly become the one best candidate for leadership roles and promotions available through quiet hiring.
A bulletproof development plan includes education, skill acquisition, and coaching.
So how about you?
Are you prepared to seize opportunities being created through quiet quitting and quiet hiring?
