Why Being Overqualified Is a Job Search Story Problem, Not a Resume Problem

"We think you're overqualified."

If you've heard that, you’ll know how much it stings.

You've got the experience.

You've got the results.

Yet somehow, the very things that should make you the obvious choice are being used as a reason to pass you over.

So most people do the logical thing.

They start shrinking their resume.

They remove a title. Drop a degree. Cut their accomplishments. Try to look like a little less.

That usually doesn’t work, because “overqualified” isn’t really a resume problem.

It’s a story problem.

What "Overqualified" Actually Means

When a hiring manager says, “You’re overqualified,” they're seldom talking about your skills. They're talking about their fears.

Will you get bored?

Will you leave when something better comes along?

Will you expect more money?

Will you be difficult to manage because you’ve held more senior roles?

They’re wondering whether your decision to pursue the job makes sense. And if you don’t explain that story, the hiring manager will create one for you.

Why Trimming Your Resume Backfires

Removing experience from your resume doesn’t eliminate those concerns. It simply makes your value murkier.

Worse, when you start minimizing what you’ve accomplished, you may walk into interviews sounding less confident and less excited about your career.

That’s not how you stand out! It makes you forgettable, and it’s the opposite of what gets someone hired.

Your experience should be an advantage.

The goal is not to hide what you’ve done. It’s to explain clearly:

Why this role? Why now? And why are you excited to bring everything you’ve learned to it?

When that story makes sense, “overqualified” can start looking a lot more like exactly what we need.
