Thinking About a Career Change? 7 Signs It's Time to Explore Your Next Move
Most people don't wake up one morning and decide to change careers.
It usually builds slowly.
A little restlessness. A few too many Sunday nights spent dreading Monday. A growing feeling that the job you once wanted doesn’t fit the person you’ve become.
Everyone has bad weeks. But when those weeks become a pattern, it’s worth paying attention.
Here are seven signs that it may be time to explore what’s next.
1. Sunday nights feel heavy.
A little Monday reluctance is normal. But if the dread creeps in every Sunday afternoon, your time off is being spent bracing for your time on. That costs you more than the hours you're paid for.
2. You've stopped growing.
When was the last time your work genuinely challenged or excited you? Comfort can feel great for a while. Eventually, though, comfort can become stuck.
3. You don't recognize yourself in the work anymore.
Maybe the company changed. Maybe your priorities changed. Either way, the work no longer reflects what you care about. You can be very good at what you do and still realize it’s no longer right for you.
Being capable of doing something doesn’t mean you have to keep doing it.
4. You envy other people's careers.
You find yourself reading job descriptions you have no intention of applying for or wondering what it would be like to do something completely different.
Don’t dismiss that curiosity. It may be telling you what your current role is missing.
5. The paycheck is the only reason you’re staying.
Of course compensation matters. But if money is the only thing keeping you in a role you’ve otherwise outgrown, it may be time to ask what that paycheck is costing you.
Golden handcuffs are still handcuffs.
6. Your health or relationships are paying the price.
You’re exhausted. You have less patience. You no longer have energy for the people who matter. When a role drains the parts of your life that have nothing to do with work, that's the real bill coming due.
A successful career should support your life, not consume it.
7. You keep waiting for "someday."
This is the one people ignore the longest. Someday is the most expensive word in a career, because it subtly turns into years. If you've been saying it longer than you'd like to admit, that's your answer.
If several of these signs sound familiar, pay attention to them. A career transition doesn’t have to begin with a giant leap. You don’t need to resign tomorrow. You don’t even need to know exactly what comes next. But you can start exploring.
Noticing the signs is the first step. Knowing what to do next is another.
In my next article, I’ll share how to navigate a career transition with confidence, even when you can’t see the entire path yet.
