The Executive Resume Section Decision-Makers Read

August 06, 20262 min read

Most of your resume gets skimmed, not read.

A recruiter gives it a few seconds at best.

A hiring manager glances at it between doing two other things.

Large parts of it never get a proper look.

But there is one section decision-makers often read closely.

It is your purpose statement.

Those few lines at the top of your resume can shape how everything below them is viewed. Unfortunately, many executives fill that valuable space with language that sounds professional but says almost nothing.

I see this version constantly:

“Results-driven executive with more than 20 years of experience in operations leadership across multiple industries.”

It sounds impressive at first.

But read it again. Does it tell the reader anything specific about what you do?

No. It sounds like every other resume.

It does not explain what problems you solve, what improvements you lead, or why an organization should choose you over another experienced executive.

The person reading it doesn’t care about that yet. They are thinking about the leadership gap on their team, the business problem slowing them down, and the results they need their next executive to deliver.

Now think about when your resume matters most. It is not always during the first screening or interview. It may be later, when a hiring committee compares finalists and decides who they should move forward with.

If those opening lines make your value obvious, you’ll stay in the conversation. If they read like everyone else's, you’ll fade.

So the real question is not whether the purpose statement in your executive resume sounds professional. It’s whether it works.

In the next article, I will break down how to write a purpose statement that earns its place at the top of your resume and keeps you in the conversation.
