Fourth of July Special: Declaring Your Own Career Independence
Happy Fourth of July!
Before the fireworks, burgers, beach chairs, and well-earned time off, let’s talk about independence.
Not just the kind we celebrate with flags, but the kind related to your career.
Every year, the Fourth of July celebrations remind us to think about freedom. Historical freedom, yes. National freedom, absolutely. But there is also another kind of freedom that matters deeply.
Personal freedom. Professional freedom.
The kind of freedom that makes you ask: “Am I actually free in my career, or have I just gotten comfortable?”
Because there is a big difference.
Comfortable Isn't the Same as Free
Many people stay in jobs that don't fit because leaving feels riskier than staying. Sound familiar?
“Free,” on the other hand, means you have options. It means you are staying because you want to, not because you are afraid to move. It means you know what you want next, or you are finally willing to figure it out instead of waiting for the perfect sign from the universe.
Here’s what most people don’t want to hear: The perfect time usually never arrives.
The founding fathers didn't wait for permission. They didn't wait for the "perfect time." They made a decision, stood behind it, and dealt with whatever came next.
Most people spend more time waiting than searching.
They wait for the market to feel right.
They wait for confidence to magically appear before taking action.
It doesn't work that way.
Confidence shows up after you act. Not before.
Three Ways to Declare Your Own Independence This Year
1. Get clear on what freedom looks like for you.
More money?
More flexibility?
Work that doesn't drain you by Wednesday?
Name it specifically. Vague goals don't move you anywhere.
2. Stop waiting for the "right time." There isn't one. The job market will always have some excuse built in. Take the next step anyway.
3. Build your own network of allies. The colonists didn't win independence alone. You won't land your next role on your own either. Reach out to the people in your corner. Let them help.
Independence isn't something you wait for. It's something you declare.
So, this Fourth of July, while you're watching the fireworks, ask yourself: “Am I actually free in my career, or am I staying because it feels familiar?”
If the honest answer makes you uncomfortable, that's usually a sign that it's time to do something about it.
Always remember, you are The ONE Best! Here's to your own declaration of independence.
