Executive Resume Purpose Statements That Get Attention
Previously, I explained why the purpose statement at the top of your executive resume can carry more weight than everything that follows.
Now, let’s talk about how to write one that gets attention.
Start with Their Problem, Not Your History
Most executive resumes begin with years of experience, previous titles, and broad claims about leadership.
That information may be accurate, but it rarely gives the reader a compelling reason to continue.
A strong purpose statement starts with the value you can bring to the specific role and organization you are targeting.
Compare these two openings:
Generic:
“Seasoned finance leader with a proven track record of success.”
Specific:
“To strengthen Treasury Department operations by safeguarding and optimizing ultra-large institutional assets, improving financial controls, and delivering the leadership and financial expertise needed to reduce risk and support confident decision-making across the banking industry.”
The first statement could describe thousands of candidates.
The second identifies a problem, communicates value, and gives the reader a reason to keep going.
Write Something Only You Can Claim
Generic language sinks most purpose statements.
They sound impressive, but they do not help you stand out.
Your opening should answer two important questions:
What problem do you solve?
What result do you consistently produce?
The more specific your answer becomes, the easier it will be for the right employer to recognize your value.
Your purpose statement should not simply describe your career. It should position you as the solution to a challenge the organization already needs to address.
Look at the top of your resume right now.
Is it mainly about your background, or does it clearly communicate what you can do for the reader? Could the same statement appear on hundreds of other executive resumes?
If the answer is yes, keep refining those opening lines until the right decision-maker reads them and thinks:
This is someone I need to speak with.
