Columbus Day Special: How to Navigate a Career Transition With Confidence
With Columbus Day approaching, this quarter is a fitting time to think about exploration. Not of new lands, but of new possibilities in your career.
Recently, I walked you through the signs that it might be time for a career change. Recognizing those signs is one thing. Actually setting sail is another.
The hardest part of a career transition isn't spotting that you're ready. It's moving forward without a guarantee of what's on the other side. Every explorer has faced that same moment where they’re staring at open water, unsure of exactly where it leads.
Get Clear on Your Destination First
Explorers didn't leave port hoping to end up somewhere good. They had a direction.
Before you make a move, get specific about where you're headed.
What kind of work excites you?
What environment brings out your best?
What would make you look forward to Monday mornings again?
A vague goal creates a scattered job search. A clear destination turns into a map that gives you direction and helps other people understand how they can help you.
You Don't Need to Have the Whole Route Mapped Out
This is where many people get stuck. They want to see the entire path before taking the first step.
That's not how exploration works. Columbus didn't have the full map. He had a direction, a first move, and the willingness to adjust course along the way.
In the same way, you don't need every answer before you begin your career transition. You just need to know your next move.
That might mean reconnecting with someone in your network, researching a new industry, improving your LinkedIn profile, or having a conversation with someone doing the work you're considering.
Take the next step. Then adjust as you learn more.
Don't Navigate It Alone. Bring a Crew
No one crosses open water alone.
The people who navigate career transitions best don't do it in isolation. They lean on their network, reconnect with people who know their strengths, and let others help open doors.
Reach out before you feel fully ready. The relationships you build now can become the wind in your sails later.
One introduction, idea, or conversation can completely change the direction of your search.
Confidence Comes From Moving, Not Waiting
You will not feel completely certain before you start. Nobody does. Confidence isn't what gets you to take the first step. You take action, and that action builds confidence.
You may not know exactly where the journey will lead. That's okay. You only need enough clarity to take the next step.
So look at where you are right now. Are you still standing at the shore, waiting for a sign you already have?
Remember, the exploration starts the moment you decide to begin.
